Projects - Arctic Bay
  • In order to meet the new environmental standards of the Government of Canada, the Arctic Bay community had to upgrade their wastewater treatment facilities. To this end, Kudlik Construction Ltd. was tasked with the construction of a new groundwater retention basin. For technical reasons, the basin was built far from the village in a remote mountain area. The project also included the construction of a 1.5 km road. It was necessary to blast the permafrost in order to anchor a waterproof membrane. Finally, the installation of thermistors in the walls of the embankment will track the temperature at the center of the berms and ensure water tightness in the future.

  • In 2005, the airport serving the village of Arctic Bay was situated in Nanisivik, which is approximately a 60 minute drive (32 km in a mountainous area) from the community. The Government of Nunavut decided to open a new site closer to the village (5 km). This project involved the stripping of existing organic soil, the excavation of more than 250 000 m3 of permafrost for the construction of the new runway, taxiway, apron, car parking and access road. Water drainage was accomplished by ditching of 1.7 km fully covered by rip-rap.
